Changelog
What's changed, and why it matters to your numbers.
Every new calculator, tax-year data update, and meaningful fix lands here in plain language — this is what backs the promise on our About page that corrections and changes are logged and credited. Found something we should fix? Tell us.
-
New: track your net worth and emergency fund over time
The Net Worth and Emergency Fund calculators now have a "Save today's snapshot" button — come back next month and see your progress as a trend chart with a "+$4,200 since June" style delta. Snapshots stay in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
-
Self-employed? See your CRA quarterly instalments
The tax calculator now warns you when your estimated tax owing crosses CRA's $3,000 instalment threshold ($1,800 in Quebec), with your estimated per-quarter amount and the four due dates.
-
Your numbers now follow you between calculators
The FIRE Advanced Toolkit pre-fills your age, balances, and spending from the other calculators, and the debt total from your Debt Payoff Planner now flows into the Budget tool's surplus router automatically — no more retyping the same numbers.
-
A cleaner homepage
Removed a duplicate browse row and moved the "What's your situation?" section higher, so finding the right calculator takes fewer decisions.
-
New: TFSA vs RRSP now has a retirement drawdown mode
Already retired or close to it? Switch the TFSA vs RRSP calculator to "In retirement (drawdown)" mode, enter your existing balances, and see whether drawing down your RRSP or TFSA first puts more spendable cash in your pocket over your retirement.
-
Fixed: self-employed users were being charged EI by mistake
The tax calculator no longer deducts EI premiums for self-employed income — EI isn't charged on self-employment earnings by default. Your per-paycheque breakdown also now correctly matches whichever pay-period you've selected.
-
Fixed: BC foreign-buyer tax missing from your land transfer tax total
If you had the BC or NS foreign/non-resident buyer tax toggled on, it was being calculated but not actually added into the headline Provincial LTT figure. It's now included in the total you see.
-
Fixed: CPP timing "breakeven" age was wrong
The FIRE Advanced Toolkit's CPP breakeven-age result was showing a nonsensical answer due to a calculation bug. It now shows the correct age at which delaying CPP starts to pay off.
-
Fixed: EV vs Gas chart caption could contradict the numbers
The break-even summary text above the EV vs Gas chart was hardcoded and could say something different from what the chart itself showed. It's now generated from the same numbers as the chart, every time.
-
Calgary added to FIRE Explorer, plus a starter emergency fund tier
Calgary joins the FIRE Location Explorer's baseline cities. The Emergency Fund calculator also picked up a "starter fund" tier for anyone just beginning to build their cushion rather than aiming straight for 3-6 months of expenses.
-
Land Transfer Tax: BC and Nova Scotia foreign/non-resident buyer taxes
Buying property in BC or NS as a foreign national or non-resident? You can now model the extra 20% (BC) or 10% (NS) tax on top of regular land transfer tax, plus a clear heads-up about the federal ban on non-Canadian home purchases.
-
Take-home pay, per paycheque
The tax calculator now shows your take-home pay as annual, monthly, biweekly, semi-monthly, or weekly — pick whichever matches how you actually get paid.
-
EV vs Gas: pick your actual car
Added a quick-fill dropdown with 10 popular gas cars and 10 popular EVs — pick one to fill in price and fuel/energy use instead of looking up the numbers yourself.
-
Rent vs Buy now includes condo fees
If you're comparing a condo purchase, monthly strata/condo fees are now part of the "buy" cost — previously they were left out entirely.
-
Mortgage-to-land-transfer-tax handoff, and more FAQs
Your CMHC insurance premium now carries over automatically from the mortgage calculator into the land transfer tax calculator. Also added FAQ sections to 8 more calculators (CAGR, Compound Interest, Couch Potato Rebalancer, ETF Comparison, Capital Gains, Budget, Emergency Fund, Net Worth) and a couple of new repair types on the Mechanic Benchmarker.
-
New: RESP & CESG Calculator
See how much free government grant money your RESP contributions attract each year — basic and additional CESG, both lifetime caps, and how it all grows toward your child's education fund.
-
Dealer Fee Decoder: copy the negotiation scripts
Each "what to say" script now has its own copy button, plus a "Copy all scripts" button that grabs everything at once before you walk into the dealership.
-
More FAQs, cleaner shared links
Added FAQ sections to Rent vs Buy, Land Transfer Tax, and Salary Required for Mortgage. Also cleaned up shared calculator links across the site that used to show ugly numbers like "0.054900000000000004" instead of "5.49%".
-
New: Debt Payoff Planner
Compare avalanche vs snowball payoff order across up to 3 debts — see exactly which one to attack first, your real debt-free date, and how much interest each strategy costs you.
-
FAQs are now visible on the page, not just for Google
Several calculators had written FAQ answers that only search engines could see. They now show up as an on-page "Frequently asked questions" section too.
-
Fixed a misleading mortgage stress-test result
The mortgage calculator's Pass/Fail stress-test result could look like it was based on your income when it was actually using an unconfirmed placeholder — it now says so clearly until you enter your own number.
-
Security & privacy hardening
Added a cookie-consent banner (Google Consent Mode) so analytics/ad cookies only run after you say yes, standard security headers on every page, and a request cap on the Smart Import AI helper so it can't be abused.
-
FIRE & Retirement got its own home
Launched the FIRE & Retirement hub, gathering the FIRE Calculator, Dream FIRE, Advanced Toolkit, and Location Explorer in one place instead of being buried under general "Investing." Every FIRE tool also picked up more FAQs and clearer navigation back to related tools.
-
FIRE Location Explorer: more cities, easier to search
Added dozens more cities to the Location Explorer and a searchable world-map ribbon, so it's faster to find the specific city you're curious about instead of scrolling region tabs.
-
"Why is this the cost?" and "why this score?" explanations
On the FIRE Location Explorer, hovering a cost figure or a quality-of-life score now shows the assumptions and sources behind it, instead of asking you to just trust a number.
-
Cost-of-living compare: adjust the assumptions yourself
The FIRE city-compare tool now has per-category sliders (housing, food, transport, etc.) so you can dial the cost assumptions to your own spending style instead of a single fixed average — and your adjustments are remembered.
-
FIRE Location Explorer launched
New tool: compare cost of living, climate, and quality-of-life across dozens of cities worldwide, with a savings-impact calculator showing how relocating (part-time or full-time) changes your FIRE number.
-
Smart Import: faster bulk categorization
When a bank statement import leaves several transactions uncategorized, you can now bulk-assign them in one pass instead of one at a time, and the categorizer improves over time from anonymized feedback.
-
FIRE Advanced Toolkit + CAD/USD toggle
New advanced page with a Monte-Carlo retirement-survival simulator, a CPP/OAS timing optimizer, an RRSP/TFSA/non-registered drawdown planner, and a budget lifecycle planner. Also added a CAD/USD currency toggle across every calculator.
