Privacy Policy

The short version

Your financial data never leaves your device. Every calculation on Budget Beavers runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. We have no server that receives your income, home price, savings balance, or any other number you enter. We cannot see it, store it, or share it — because we never have it.

What we collect and why

1. Nothing you type into our calculators

The inputs you enter — salary, mortgage amount, down payment, tax bracket, or anything else — are processed locally in your browser. They are not transmitted to us or any third party. We have no database of user calculations.

2. Anonymous usage analytics (localStorage only)

We maintain a lightweight, entirely client-side navigation log stored in your browser's localStorage under the key bb_nav_log. This log records which pages you visited and how you navigated between them (for example, "came from the hero carousel" vs "used the search palette"). This data never leaves your browser — it is never transmitted to us or any third party. It exists solely to help us understand which tools are hard to find, so we can improve the site's navigation. You can view or delete this log at any time by running localStorage.removeItem('bb_nav_log') in your browser's developer console.

3. Theme preference

If you change the site's visual theme (light/dark modes), your preference is saved in localStorage under bb_theme. This never leaves your device.

4. Cloudflare analytics

Our hosting provider (Cloudflare) collects basic, anonymised web analytics: page views, geographic region (country level), device type, and performance metrics. This is aggregated data with no personal identifiers. No cookies are used for analytics. See Cloudflare's privacy policy for details.

5. Contact form submissions

If you use our contact form, the message and any email address you provide are used solely to respond to your enquiry. We do not add you to any mailing list or share this information with third parties.

Cookies

Budget Beavers does not use tracking cookies. We use localStorage (not cookies) to store your theme preference and the local navigation log. localStorage data stays on your device and is not transmitted with HTTP requests.

Affiliate partners (Wealthsimple, Questrade, Ratehub, Borrowell) may set their own cookies when you click through to their sites. Their privacy policies govern that data — we have no access to it.

Affiliate links and third-party sites

Some pages contain affiliate links to Canadian financial services. When you click these links and sign up with a partner, Budget Beavers may earn a referral fee. We disclose these relationships clearly on each page. The partner's own privacy policy governs any data they collect. We do not receive any personal data about you from our affiliate partners.

Display advertising

Budget Beavers may display advertising served by Google AdSense or similar networks. These networks may use cookies and other tracking technologies to serve relevant ads. You can opt out of personalised advertising through Google's Ad Settings or through the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out.

Children

Budget Beavers is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your rights (PIPEDA)

Under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), you have the right to access, correct, and request deletion of personal information we hold about you. Since we hold no personal financial data (all calculations are client-side), the only personal data we may hold is the content of a contact message you've sent us. To request access or deletion, email us via the contact page.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, the "Last updated" date at the top changes. Continued use of the site after a policy change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
